Modern capacity management in single wagon transport

The system developed by Accso helps to increase the capacity, efficiency, quality, and reliability of rail freight transport, thereby reducing CO2 emissions.

Using digitalization to improve climate protection in freight transport

Our customer wants to make rail freight transport even more attractive by improving and increasing the reliability of single-carriage transport control. The company aims to strengthen its position as a leading rail logistics provider and make a significant contribution to climate protection through sustainable transport and logistics services. Investment in digitalization, including the introduction of the capacity management system, plays a key role in this strategy.

Efficient control for single-car traffic

Single wagon transport, which accounts for around 18 percent of rail freight transport in Germany, enables smaller shipments to be transported in an environmentally friendly manner. This is because shifting traffic to rail as an alternative to trucks reduces CO2 emissions by up to 80 percent. In single wagon transport in particular, managing the complex network, including the bundling and distribution of wagons and train formation, poses a major challenge.

Optimal transport plans thanks to intelligent algorithms

Based on intelligent algorithms, the system generates the optimal transport plans for each individual vehicle. This is based on business rules, capacity offers, and manual notifications. Customer agreements, especially delivery times, also play an important role. This ensures that existing capacities are utilized to the fullest extent possible and improves the flow of information and customer satisfaction, which has a positive effect on attractiveness for existing and new customers.

“In order to assemble the right team for such a complex project, Accso worked with its partner network, including Q_Perior and Maiborn-Wolff. The team comprised up to 50 people who worked for the client over a project period of 2.5 years.”Florian KrausPartner at Accso

Since the successful and smooth introduction of production at the end of 2020, we have been supporting the maintenance and further development of the system in the long term with a stable design and development team.

A high-performance system based on cloud and microservices

The developed system replaces the existing host-based legacy application with a cloud-native application based on state-of-the-art technologies and contributes to our customer's digital transformation.
As a core element of the company's IT, the new system integrates data from more than ten IT systems to create transport plans. Once all the necessary information is available, the algorithm calculates all transport options, taking into account both the spatial route and the time of delivery. The best option is then presented to dispatchers and customers. This technology makes it possible to identify network bottlenecks and the impact of manual dispatching, disruptions, and delays at an early stage and address them in near real time, which improves predictability and reliability in time-sensitive single-carriage transport. The high-performance system processes around 30,000 orders daily and creates a multiple of transport plans. Thanks to a flexible cloud solution and microservice architecture, future requirements can also be implemented without any problems and the system can be expanded and scaled at any time.
